Using NIVEA MEN Sensitive Post Shave Balm as PRIMER?

Monday, 7 March 2016

Yes, if you guys are not familiar with this recent discovery, first introduced by the infamous NikkieTutorials, then this post may be a real shocker!

In fact, this title is no joke; the new beauty trend/secret that has taken the makeup obsessed community around us by storm is using a MEN'S post-shaving product to prime your face before makeup! I mean, what have we come to?

You may well be thinking, "Aren't there already plenty of actual primers that are there to do that job?", and yes, there are, however, during this blogpost, I'm going to explain to you why the Nivea men's post shaving balm has now become MY go to primer. That's right, everyday when I come to do my daily makeup, THIS is my preferred primer and I doubt I'll change my mind about this product anytime soon.

After watching different YouTubers/Bloggers rave about this shaving balm for a quite a while, my sister and I finally decided that it was completely necessary to barge into every local supermarket and drugstore, like bulls in china shops, and turn them upside down in order to find this little gem. And it was definitely worth it; we finally found it in our local supermarket for 5 euros! (That adds up to about 4 pounds and 5-ish dollars.) Trust me, that is an absolute bargain, especially considering the amount of product that you are getting! Each bottle contains 100ml which is approximately FIVE TIMES the average tube of primer; this will literally last forever and won't empty your wallet each time you need to buy a new one.

Probably one of the main fears that everybody has when it comes to trying out this Nivea shaving balm is the smell. This product, obviously, has a very masculine scent to it; it's like the typical smell of a well groomed 40 year old man (I know that sounds incredibly weird but it's surprisingly accurate) which, I have to say myself, is not the nicest of scents nor is it anybody's usual perfume choice. Well, Unless you're of the male species, of course.

However, the musky, masculinity of the 'primer' is pretty easy to mask though; after applying your foundation, concealer and any other extras you like to add into your makeup routine, the smell will be suitably disguised. And after half an hour to an hour wearing the makeup, it will have completely disappeared! Happy days! So there is absolutely no need to worry about people thinking that you're wearing the same cologne as your dad.

Now let's talk about the texture of this product. At first, the Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm is very loose and seems too liquified and sloppy to become a fully functional primer but when worked into the face for 2-3 minutes, the formula changes to a sticky and 'tacky' consistency. This makes it the perfect base for your makeup because the adhesiveness helps the makeup to really latch onto the face and remain there for an entire day, which is fantastic. I even forgot to wear a setting spray yesterday (oops...) and, due to the balm, my makeup stayed perfectly in place anyway!

Ok, let me just say, this shot took absolutely ages to perfect and capture but I just thought I would show you the consistency of the product.
Finally, the thing you guys probably were waiting for, "How does this primer compare to other primers in terms of efficacy?" Well, I find that this product gives you extremely impressive results as a primer and I would go far as to say that it pips some of it's close and pricey competitors to the post.

Throughout the day, I found that that the primer was really fantastic for my skin and left my makeup looking really flawless, especially the dry areas. Normally, after a couple of hours, the foundation on my chin (my dry area) begins to crack and look really dehydrated, however, after using this primer, I, unusually, didn't experience anything like that!

Unfortunately, it wasn't able to control the amount of oil seeping through onto my forehead and cheeks but that's nothing a good old blot with a piece of tissue every couple of hours can't solve, eh?

From that, I think we can deduce that the balm is better at moisturising than oil controlling, so if you have dry skin, this will be absolutely amazing for you and will keep your skin nourished for the ENTIRE day at the same time as looking fly. But, on the other hand, I feel that this primer is still suitable for people with oily skin who also want a long-lasting, flawless face of makeup but are willing to give themselves a little dab from time to time.

Overall, I am absolutely in love with the concept of using this quick and easy drugstore alternative to a primer; It's nourishing, incredibly inexpensive, gives you a perfect finish and once it's on underneath your makeup, it's not going ANYWHERE for at least 16 hours. I definitely recommend this product highly and strongly feel that this little trick, whether considered weird by some people, will become your new beauty staple. Will you make the change today?

As you can see, the Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm has already become best friends with some of my other makeup goodies. It fits fantastically into my collection!
Thank you so much for reading this blog post, I hope you really enjoyed it and, after reading my positive review, will pick one up for yourself some day.
